Started knocking on doors today, on E Fulton. Met a gentleman who, as he looked over a brochure, recognized First CRC as the church he often went to as a child (he said he lived on Henry St. 45 years ago) and learned "Onward Christian Soldiers" (not my favorite hymn but a fascinating connection). He remembered Pastor Beelen and was interested to hear that he is still around and his son is pastor at Madison Square CRC.
It's so interesting to meet people and be able to make connections while campaigning! Does this only happen in Grand Rapids?

- Pat and I have lived at 323 Paris SE since 1976. Our three children attended Oakdale Christian School, Grand Rapids Christian High School and Calvin College. We are members of First Christian Reformed church, on the corner of Bates and Henry streets. I was a County Commissioner from 1992 to 2000, representing what was then the 18th District. I joined the Commission again in 2009 and still serve. I have the most amazing neighbors and love the community that we live in. Over the years I've been involved in a variety of neighborhood development efforts in the Baxter and Wealthy Street areas and was deeply involved in several human service initiatives during my 15 years as Assistant Director of Baxter Community Center. Downtown Grand Rapids has been a great place to live, work and raise a family. I hope that I can that I can help maintain the greatness of our community in my service as a County Commissioner!
